Posted: Sun Mar 30, 2008 11:55 am

Rescues that Masquerade as ‘Real Rescues’ (*There is no reference to any one rescue or individual in the U.S. This is a generalized viewpoint and opinion)

As so many are aware over the past year horse communities have been stricken not only by the devastating drought issues (supplies of hay and increased cost) but also by the nations poor economy. The effects are being felt across the nation and particularly hard by many rescue organizations as phone calls for intake of horses and assistance keeps rescues scrambling.

Rescues depend on support from the public, through fundraising, charitable events, etc. What’s also been recognized are many new horse rescues ‘hanging out their shingle’ within the past 1-2 yrs. Many of them begin with good intentions, they feel the need to offer assistance and a safe haven for a horse(s). Unfortunately, once becoming involved, many of them also recognize just how easyit is to garner monetary public support and this aspect is to the detriment to many of the well established, legitimate (federal registered 501 (c) (3) as well as state non-profit) and hard working rescues. It’s what gives legitimate equine rescues across the board, ‘a bad taste’ in the eyes of the public. Some of these are nothing more than predators trolling the online horse communites and scamming the public out of money.

Let’s break some of these types of ‘rescues’ down for examination:

1) Individual or group- may obtain state or both state and federal non-profit status, that hangs out their rescue shingle in the hopes that they'll garner monetary contributions for their 'rescue', however does not use the donations for the intended purpose. Instead of keeping donations aside that were designated for a specific purpose, they'll wine and dine, shop for themselves and the horses in their care are given the bare minimum to survive. In some of these instances the inablity to be honest to the public, to provide the necessary care for the horses becomes so neglectful that it ends in seizure and the news of these types of scam rescues hits the rescue communities like wild fire, in turn subjecting them to the addage 'all a bunch of bad apples'.

2) This one can be a bit more complex, but many seasoned to the rescue of horses have seen this example. An individual decides they’re going to become a ‘rescue’, again hangs out the shingle to the public so they can solicit donations from the public. They may obtain their state non profit status or both federal and state. They realize that for all public appearances, it’s important to appearto be as ‘legitimate’ as possible. They may also have several of their own ‘personal’ horses, may also engage in the activity of breeding (some may even own their own stallions/broodmares) and personally favor one breed versus another. Often times when initially introduced to any of the online horse communities, they make a ‘mission’ of saving a horse (or horses) providing the necessary ‘lip service’ to their supporters and public (can’t let the donations dry up!), provide lots of pictures and updates and ask for continued donations for everything from ongoing veterinary care (if necessary) to fencing supplies (ie; personal improvements to their property), wormers, supplements, halters and lead ropes. One or two ‘saves’ may actually be adopted- there is a need to keep up ‘appearances’. Then perhaps, if any of the horse(s) saved by this type of rescue appeals to them (perhaps for breeding?) – they'll say that it’s going to remain and be kept by them as they ‘just can’t bear to part’ (and realize here- this is after all the initial expense has been donated by their supporters- ie; vet care, etc.). Some of the horses ‘saved’ in this type of situation may be adopted or sold (if sold one may be hard pressed to uncover as there’s a good job at hiding selling horses!). This is also the type of 'rescue' that has the need to stay as 'top dog' (attention seeker) within the online horse communities, constantly 'bumping' their fundraising, touting their 'expertise' with horses and take every chance to discredit another rescue or individual (remember, there's competition!). This type of rescue can also be spotted as often times, the recounts of their 'stories' don't jive- thus sending them to private correspondence with only their true blue supporters (blind sheep). This situation is indicative of an individual that enjoys having horses and at some point realizes that their personal horse ‘habit’ can be financed by others- obtaining horses paid for by others, improvements to their properties, additional funds to draw from to support their ‘personal’ horses. Of course most horseowners would thoroughly enjoy this type of situation as the initial cost involved is off their shoulder (don’t forget that the ‘save’ of the horse(s) was monetarily done by others), and all initial expenses the burden of public supporters. These types can be found on many online horse communities to the extent that any normal and knowledgeable horseowner would beg the question 'when do they do the daily chores'?- the majority of their time is spent online! What type of situation can this be classified? Many would term this as a predator scamming the public to support their own horse ‘habit’. This would not fall under the category of mental disorder- just a clever and crafty predatorwith narcissistic tendancies.

3) An individual or group (all ‘like-minded’) decide to set up shop, obtain state non profit status or both state and federal. They may be small or large in size, and quickly learn to navigate the online horse communities and target those sympathetic to the plight of horse slaughter. Again, as is the case in the above mentioned situation (financing personal horse habits), they provide plenty of lip service to their supporters, and pictures of horses in need – there is an ongoing need to garnish more supporters as well as keep those already giving monetary support. By all appearances they are a rescue. Unfortunately in this situation, there is only specific lip service provided to the public- if a supporter decides to request an update on a specific horse the request goes unanswered. When pressed by a supporter only a partial explanation or answer is given. Days or weeks may pass all in the hopes that any full detailed report or explanation will simply go away. In some instances the inquiry will subside but in other instances when pressed and fully confronted by many supporters, the answer reflects unfavorably on the rescue and ‘teams’ are engaged to provide ‘damage control’. Accountability in this type of situation is sketchy at best – little to no accountability of monies or horses. This type of situation is full fledged scam artists.

In overview, it’s completely comprehensible that there may be a hodge-podge of mixing any of the three types of examples given above. There may also be co-mingling of adoptions/sale and transfer of horses/transfers of monies amongst other ‘rescues’ or private individuals all to continue to ‘muddy’ the waters and prevent the public from seeing a transparent picture. These are just a few examples of ‘rescues’ (and that is a term to be used loosely) that are invading the legitimate equine rescue scene and clouding the judgement of the public in general of what makes a good equine rescue.

Legitimate equine rescues are eager to provide information, do not avoid questions being asked (remember- when pressed by questions from the public in the above mentioned situations, it is also common to ‘flip’ the situation and cry ‘victim’- this is just a means to deflect the questioning), are willing to provide their financial status to anyone that inquires, provides detailed accounting of monies and horses, provides a ‘track record’ of adoptions, does not co-mingle personal horses with rescued horses (rescued horses are adopted and not kept after initial bills are paid by the public), advocates other means of fundraising besides total reliance from an on-line horse community, attends seminars and promotes responsible horse ownership to the public, do not advocate breeding (this only adds to the population of horses).

If you are considering donating to a one time cause or ongoing support to any rescue, it cannot be stressed enough to thoroughly do your homework. Whether you are being asked to donate privately via email or publicly through an online horse community, there are many ways to uncover and scrutinize a rescue. Search engines can be very revealing- enter the rescues name, address, phone number or email (some scam artists use multiple email addresses!). If you’re a participant within an online horse community, many have search features that can generate comments made by a rescue- dig deep and be sure not to disregard some of the ‘general’ chit chat that may occur as often times ‘slip-ups’ can be found.

Become an educated donor and wise with your money- there will always be horses in need and careful scrutiny needs to be made in making these decisions.

I had a question, can we post about horses that are not comming from 501c3? Mine are only available locally on free lease as I try to provide a permanent protection for my horses. I'm incorporated, but not 501c3. I do all rehab out of pocket and do not solicit public funds.

Often times, individuals ask if there are other forms of offering support other than monetary, and the answer is yes! Many rescues benefit from volunteers to do specific tasks as operating a rescue can be very time consuming. Tasks as simple as volunteering to make phone calls can assist a rescue in their daily chores. Fostering a horse is also very rewarding and if interested, a rescue can customize the responsibilities to ensure a win-win situation for all involved!

We've created a simple form that can be submitted if anyone is interested! Thank you!
Notes: Miles is a great horse. He is a 16'2 Bay Thoroughbred looking for a great home.I had to make a move too NY so I want him to get a good home. He has a tattoo on his lip and is registered. He has some arthritis in his left front leg which produces some lameness . He was fine most of the time I rode him, and he was given 1 bute a day. But he can have this reoccuring lameness possibly. He would make a great pasture mate or can be ridden also. When ridden, he in a lovely frame naturally. He knows the basics- off the track for a year and a half. Load, clips ties, and stands for the farrier and vet.

It's my understanding that all three horses will be picked up today and out of harms way. They will still need permanant loving homes- contact if interested. References and proof of good home will be required (wouldn't want to see them end up at risk again!) Thanks!

I am aware of some rescues that do not prohibit breeding rescued mares.

I am also aware of some rescues that breed privately. What I do not agree with when it comes to privately breeding (by a rescue) is to hear the reasoning of 'wanting to have a youngster' just because it's coming from their own stallion/mare (if the stallion or mare [or both] have some type of champion performance record or some other outstanding quality that merits reproduction, that may be an exception= keyword may). In my opinion, that's a poor excuse and only serves to be self gratifying. With all the tens of thousands of horses on this earth, and so many of them shipped to slaughter for human consumption, I just view that behavior as twisted thinking, and moreso when it's a rescue that's doing it.

He is still available and very much at risk. Canter-OH is stepping in to help, you can contact them or the owner. At this point, he is still with the owner.

March 4 and 5: Two days of lobbying along with an evening reception on March 4, 7 - 9 pm:

This event will bring together all horse advocates and organizations supporting the end of Horse Slaughter. It will include a panel discussion that includes guest speakers who are leaders against slaughter. Food and beverages will be served, media and congressmen, representatives and staff will be invited. This event will be held:

FOUR POINTS BY SHERATON WASHINGTON DC DOWNTOWN 1201 K STREET, NW

More details on the two days of events can be found at: http://www.kaufmanzoning.net/horsemeat/

These details include:

1. Reception Invitation: This can be used to invite others to the reception for March 4.

2. 110th Congress Phone and Fax Directory-Color Coded to Reflect Members Position and Status on the AHSPA: Use this resource to make your appointments for lobbying. You will also be able to attend appointments made by others participating in the lobby days of March 4 and 5. If your senators and congressmen are already co sponsors, scheduling a brief appointment to thank them for their support is appropriate.

3. Appointment Form: Please report each appointment scheduled to Julie Caramante as the appointment is made (i.e. do not wait until all appointments are made before contacting Julie). We want to keep an eye on all the appointments the group makes so we can make sure to schedule appointments with key people we need to convert.

4. logo

5. Hotel Information for Lobby Days: Finding accomodation for everybody's tastes and needs is not possible for sure, but we hope that we can encourage as many to stay together as possible.
